Review of The Town (2010) by Edgar C — 01 Aug 2013
I have never been able to stand Ben Affleck's face... heck, not even his presence onscreen. He seemed to never care about acting, or being professional, as I can't recall absolutely no astounding performance of him.
But then came his writing skills with Matt Damon cooperating with Van Sant, and finally, his directorial debut. Even if I disliked Gone Baby Gone to some extent, a saw a film-maker being born and experimenting with his strong points, which he surely couldn't find. So, attempting to look good in uniforms, scoring a girl of the cast, being the protagonist who also is the bank robber leader, mixes a "romance" with decently done action sequences that recall of Michael Mann and Christopher Nolan, not necessarily because they are on par, but because such ability unexpectedly appear: he's good at handling action and tense situations.
In such way, if I hadn't known that his next film was Argo, if I had seen this film when it came out (I didn't want to), I would have expected Affleck to keep evolving into what he was supposed to find out he was good at directing films. Well, look at this guy! He seems to have nailed it. So, thanks to The Town, I now have a hopeful conviction that we will not suck so hard being behind the camera than in front of it. But please, drop the melodrama! Got it?
61/100.
