Review of The Towering Inferno (1974) by Timothy M — 18 Feb 2011
One of my passion projects is designing a film studies course on the disaster genre. I'm not sure if all the research will end up as an article or a book in the end, but the reason I can't leave the topic alone is because of films like The Towering Inferno.
It has all the classic elements: a star-studded cast, a slow build introducing all the characters, an increasingly claustrophobic atmosphere, stunning effects, small tragedies, growing terror, suspense, courage, romance, action, and above all, a scathing indictment of hubris and greed.
The performances are pitch perfect. It's definitely my favorite of the genre.
