Review of The Tourist (2010) by Tomas T — 17 Nov 2011
What you get when you try to implement pretty much all the available movie genres imaginable in a single flick and hire a big name actor catalog to star it? The answer is The Tourist.
Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp) is an apparent nobody who meets an enigmatic high class lady (Angelina Jolie) on a train trip from France to Venice, Italy. Soon enough he is high on his heels in love with the mysterious lady who entangles him in a high class heist aftermath involving Russian Mobsters, FBI, Interpol and lots of more. Action, drama and romance ensues and the viewer is in for a 1h wild ride. Sounds great, right? But in reality The Tourist is one of those entertain the masses kind of movies which proves to be hollow experience in the end. Many like me must wonder what was the whole point of the movie when all is said and done. Especially after the cheesy end twist which pretty much makes the whole movie even more pointless.
From the star couple Angelina Jolie proves to be the better as Johnny Depp spends all his screen time just acting stupid. At least Jolie manages to give out a credible act as classy and enigmatic lady but it is not enough to steer the movie to the right direction. The chemistry between the leads is off and is hard to find believable. Overall the tourist is a non-memorable and a mediocre movie with the beautiful Venice being the best that the movie has to offer..
