Review of The Tourist (2010) by Graeme H — 31 Aug 2013
Having already rated this movie with a 'not interested' label on Flixster, I begrudgingly watched it given the poor alternatives on TV one night. It was decidedly mediocre and predictable, and for which the selling point was the Depp / Jolie partnership as opposed to a decent storyline.
I'm beginning to really get bored of these films set upon high priority government investigations which baffle us with politics and dialogue as opposed to fast paced action and drama. In this instance, our Ange is the lover of a most wanted man who has stolen millions from a former boss.
Hunted by both the disgruntled victim, and by the police, she receives secret instructions from her partner as to how to throw them both of the scent, and be free to reunite in private with her man. Depp then unbeknowingly gets selected as an innocent bystander on a train to make people believe he is the hunted criminal, as opposed to the maths teacher that he really is, and then has to flee from several attacks aimed at killing him in a continuous game of cat and mouse.
Of course rather than just leave the scene after the first signs of danger, he sticks around at the thought of getting in on with our former tomb raider pin up. It's all a bit slow paced for me, and uses the actors ability to converse, more than stun us with special effects, which makes for a bit more of a duller spectacle for a so called action film.
It wasn't difficult to work out where all this was leading which also led to a pretty anticlimactic conclusion, which reminded me just why I had no desire to really watch this in the first place.
