Review of The To Do List (2013) by Nick O — 31 Jul 2013
If you are the type that finds hilarity in blow jobs, hand jobs and finger-related sex acts, then The To Do List is for you. It's dirty fun. Writer-director Maggie Carey crafts a fiendishly funny ass debut film that takes the teen comedy and turns it on its immature head.
Her script, set in 1993, brings the raunch and makes it fresh by centering all of it on a female protagonist. That would be Brandy, played with deadpan hilarity by the amazing Aubrey Plaza, and she knows exactly zip about dick.
So the virgin valedictorian makes it her mission to compile a list of sexual acts she must accomplish. She has two advisers (Alia Shawkat and Sarah Steele), she has no illusions of grandeur about romance.
While working a summer job at a pool run by Willy (a priceless Bill Hader, husband to the director), Brandy sets her sights on a stud (Scott Porter) and a total sweetheart (Johnny Simmons). Sometimes Carey lets things go a bit too far, but so what.
The To Do List is far too much fun and you'll be laughing too much to care.
