Review of The To Do List (2013) by Jacob S — 05 Aug 2013
I went into this not really knowing what to expect. All I knew was that it was a coming-of-age story about a nerdy girl in 1993 getting in touch with her sexual side before going off to college. Normally, I'm not really fond of these kind of movies, and while I don't think that this was a great movie, it was better than I thought it was likely going to be.
It has a lot of the same tropes and cliches you see in lots of teen movies dealing with sex, but thankfully, this one looks at it from a more mature--if not always realistic--perspective. Unlike a lot of movies I've seen this year, this one had a decent ending.
Again, there were a few minor nitpicks about how it was resolved, but without spoiling anything, it goes a different direction than what traditionally happens. The jokes are good and don't come off as cliched as they do in other teen sex movies.
To sum up, it's not a bad movie. It's not great either, but if you want to see a decent sex comedy that handles its material a little better--or if you grew up in the 90s and want to feel nostalgic--this one might be worth a rental.
