Review of The To Do List (2013) by Emily D — 13 Oct 2013
It's funny how rapidly our culture changes. Remember when American Pie premiered? I can still see movie "security" running after teenagers that were sneaking into the theater.
Now a movie like the To Do List comes out and nobody blinks an eye. Constant sexual references and fucks are thrown around every minute in this comedy that my brain needed some sort of baptism after viewing.
I was skeptical about Aubrey Plaza being the lead, I didn't think she could carry a movie, yet this role was a break from her dead pan comedy style and she does a great job. The supporting cast is full of familiar faces that feel genuine as well. I enjoyed was the time placement; the film is set in the 90's which is an era we haven't really seen revisited in film. The nostalgia of school photos with laser backgrounds, terrible fashion and quirky phones brought a smile to my heart.
The To Do List is a very funny, universal film. Even though the main character is a woman, everyone can relate to the situations because at one point in all of our lives we were an inexperienced virgin trying to figure out the intricacies of all the jobs.
