Review of The Titan (2018) by Rebecca A — 16 Apr 2018
I give a lot of creative liberty to science fiction, since it is fiction at the end of the day, and isn't supposed to be completely scientifically accurate. But my biggest rule for sci-fi is as follows: if you don't understand a concept, don't try to explain it. The scientific aspects in this movie were so painfully incorrect, it was hard to watch. I'll give credit where it's due to the actors, as they all played their roles well in my opinion, but when a doctor injected a substance into the main character's arm and said it was an enzyme that would change his DNA, I wanted to rip my hair out.
There were other things that bothered me too. Spoiler alert to anyone who hasn't watched it yet, but the ending really annoyed me, when everyone who was so horrified by the genetic engineering project throughout the movie suddenly acted like it was the best thing ever and decided to continue doing it because one person survived. Despite all the others dying in horrific ways after undergoing the exact same procedures as the main character. I understand treating it as a moral grey area, but the transition from 'look at how terrible and dark this is' to 'look at how amazing this is' at the end just seemed incredibly unrealistic.
All in all, it was a good idea that wasn't executed very well.
