Review of The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) by Steven B — 29 Nov 2008

I will be honest. Until this year, I didn't know who Harvey Milk was. Only reason I got aware is because of the upcoming film called "Milk" starring Sean Peen and directed by Gus Van Sant. The synopsis, the trailer, and the cast got me all interested in the film and especially the person which the film is based on.

In preparation and for my curiosity for this figure, I recently watched the 1984 documentary called "The Times of Harvey Milk", and I must say it is one of the most powerful and important documentaries I've ever witnessed.

The film almost got me to tears... What this politician/gay activist stood for and what he believed in truly inspired me to look at certain aspect (or many aspects) with a different point of view. I was, am, and will always be standing for gay rights, but this settled any doubt I had.

Harvey Milk was recruiting people of every gender, race, and sexuality to join him in his race to victory, to make this country a little bit better. At the time when homosexuals were socially unacceptable, here was one ordinary man, stood up and yelled out, "Come out of the closet. Don't be afraid! Look at me, I am gay and also outspoken and you can be as well." It took bravery for a man to do this.

The film is mesmerizing in every way. Thanks to this, I now look very much forward to "Milk". This is the kind of story that cries out for a cinematic treatment, and deservedly so. Watch this film; read a book about him; or go watch the upcoming film, either way Harvey Milk's legacy shouldn't be dismissed. I loved the film; loved the man even more; and loved what he stood for. It makes you think that it doesn't take an extraordinary person to change the world- but an ordinary to do extraordinary things.

This documentary is a must-see for anyone who believes in human rights.
