The Time Travelers Wife is a pleasant enough film. It's got all the warm and fuzzies, largely courtesy of its two leads, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, with a cute little fantastical element to differentiate it from the billion other romcoms out there.

As a stand alone film, this could have been acceptable as a nice diversion. When placed beside its source material, however, it falls so woefully short that it's hard to watch the film and not question why the studio even entertained the possibility of making this film in the first place.

The answer, of course, is money and as the end result isn't a complete mess, it's hard to fault them. It is a shame that the complexities of the novel never make it to the screen, as Claire and Henry are reduced to their lowest common denominator and their lives become nothing but Henry's condition that pulls him through time at inopportune moments.

Judging the film on its own merits, it's worth a look if you come across it on Netflix, but make sure you read the book first.
