Review of The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) by Dude A — 28 Aug 2012
Interesting ideas are hampered by some crazy time travel which includes creating cycles and loops in time, which not only seems illogical but creates a really strange and almost creepy paradox that made me laugh out loud. Obviously this is just an entertainment flick, so not taking it too seriously I enjoyed parts. The romance aspect of the plot was at times irritating, and Rachel McAdams' character is blighted with some terrible dialogue and a really pissy attitude. Eric Bana was relatively convincing however, and the players overall appeared to invest a lot in their roles. Even as a hardened male I admit to feeling a bit mushy at times which obviously means my disbelief was suspended at times.
Obviously not a serious film but has some entertainment value - the implausibility will induce some chuckles and there will be "WHAT?!" moments where you're trying to figure out what the hell just happened. The fact that it includes elements of science fiction elevated it above the usual relationship-based chick-flick and made it something I could enjoy with my girlfriend. I've not read the novel so cannot comment on the films fidelity relative to it.
