Superior to the 2002 re-imagination both in concept and in heart, as well standing shoulders above George Palâ??s previous interpretation for War of the Worlds, the 1960 original has both the time and patience to explore the philosophical questions of its plot.

There is something to be said for films in which characters sit and talk without an accompanying soundtrack (for one thing it absolves a sense of having to rush the scene), and more to be said for the well-cast actors, whom by all appearances had a ball making this film.

Though contemporary audiences might bemoan the quality of those effects present, it is the arch built around those effects which makes the film persevere.
