Review of The Three Stooges (2012) by Johnny T — 22 Oct 2012
I didn't laugh much. I don't think the Stooges are funny, although perhaps I might once have. Some of the sight gags were clever, but meh. The three leads did an admirable job of impersonation. I think this might be pretty much the movie Stooges fans were looking for. The Stooges were always better in short doses. And 90 minutes of PG nyuk-nyuk-nyuk can seem like an eternity. The casting is good. Nothing wrong with any of that, as far as it goes. Then we meet the visual spectacle that is Larry David playing Sister Mary-Mengele. Supermodel Kate Upton as a nun is a different type of visual spectacle. They have one thing in common, though: They're funny. The movie is content to simply mimic the old Stooges, bringing nothing new to the table.Absurdly brutal slapstick is a tough thing to sustain across a feature. I spent a lot of The Three Stooges staring, not laughing. For me this was a stare-out-loud affair. For the Farrellys, The Three Stooges is a labor of love. For non-believers, it's merely a labor.
VERDICT: "Not So Hot" - [Negative Reaction] These films are truly terrible films. They are not the worst things ever made, but they are definitely awful and should not be seen by anyone. (Films that are rated 1.5 or 2 stars).
