Review of The Three Musketeers (2011) by David Z — 28 Mar 2012
Unspeakably bad, but in a way that you can hardly look away. And the answer to the inevitable question "can it get worse/stupider/more insulting to your intelligence" is...YES! YES! and YES AGAIN!!
This is the dark side of trying to "update" an old story. You get a hodgepodge world of fantastical gadgetry and such well beyond its time and hokey, cringe-worthy dialogue that "kids can relate to" but is several centuries out of place.
Most insulting, though, is the blatant theft of countless classic scenes/gags from really good movies (in particular Indiana Jones, the Matrix, and Fistful of Dollars). These are not homages, or winks, or tips of the cap, these are blatant smash and grab thefts.
If a movie that creates no rules/laws and therefore has nothing to answer to, resulting in solutions to problems falling from the sky or worse, then you are in business.
If you want to see the worst of the current studio film environment, look no further.
