The Three Caballeros is a perfect example of how creative Walt Disney Feature Animation could be when given even the most pedestrian of assignments. While its predecessor, Saludos Amigos, is simply a collection of stories located and about South American locales, The Three Caballeros completely absorbs the culture, with Joe Carioca and Panchito serving as guides for Donald Duck's true introduction to the sights of the lands (especially the ladies).

Visually, the film is stunning, with its many celebrated musical sequences giving it a livelier feel than the more highbrow Fantasia and more fun than the kiddie-oriented Make Mine Music or Fun and Fancy Free.

The Three Caballeros is the only one of the so-called "package" films that has received any sort of a "classic" status and it deserves more.

This review of The Three Caballeros (1944) was written by on 28 Feb 2007.
