Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Phu N — 19 Feb 2008
This was on t.v the other night, I started watching it half-heartedly whilst diddling about on my laptop, but, moments later, I was hooked.
A mexican is killed but before his final third burial, he is dug up twice, his corpse is filled with anti-freeze, he's dropped off a horse...
Meanwhile, his hapless killer, in thrall to Tom Lee Jones' character, is put through an agony of existential accidents the like of which it would be hard to beat.
Bleak - but hilarious - reminded me of 'Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia' with a strong dash of Faulkner and just plain wacky.
A spicy western laced with grand guignol. Marvellous. Rent it out!
