Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Neil B — 25 Apr 2008
I found this solemn western quite absorbing. reminded me of something Peckinpah might have tackled in his Pat Garrett/Alfredo Garcia era.
Like the scripts Guillermo Arriaga wrote for Inarritu, he employs a non-linear structure here - though this time in service of a single story. Tommy Lee Jones directs with a sure hand and coaxes a really nice performance from Barry Pepper. My only real gripe came with a couple of coincidences built into the story- perhaps included to add a fable-ish quality - but seemed unnecessary to me, working against the realistic tone of the rest of the film...
