Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Philip B — 03 Jul 2008
Were it a bit more snappy, this would be a really entertaining film.
Tommy Lee Jones does very well indeed as director, apart from the lack of clarity between comedy and seriousness.
The narative follows the carrier of a dead body to its place of rest by land-owner Tommy Lee Jones, who writes and directs as well as acts here.
Three Burials is a multi-layered story of death, revenge, loneliness, remembrance and redemption set in the poor, desolate land on the troubled border area between the US and Mexico. Loosely based on a true story.
When his ranch hand is found dead and buried in a shallow grave in the desert, killed under mysterious circumstances, Tommy Lee Jones pursues the rightful burial for his friend.
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is great with some of the fine performances as well amazing cinematography, bi-lingual dialogue and a wonderful soundtrack.
