Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Jerry C — 16 May 2009
Three Burials has the reflective, quiet tone of No Country For Old Men and definitely has an eye for beauty, but it didn't really work for me. It's basically a revenge tale that doesn't have a wow factor within the plot. The act of vengeance that takes place doesn't really serve a purpose, because the killer is clearly already stricken with regret from the get-go. It would have made more sense to take vengeance on the policeman who really didn't give a toss. There isn't enough of Melquiades in it, I didn't see what it was that bonded him and Pete as friends. There are also some crucial plot-lines and characters that just seemed to disintegrate as the film progressed.
I absolutely would like to see more from this director though.
