Review of The Thorn in the Heart (2009) by Matt S — 09 Aug 2010
This is a slow-paced documentary that essentially makes you feel like a fly on the wall with acclaimed director Michel Gondry's family. His original aim was to document his aunt's career as a school teacher in the French countryside, but he slowly uncovers some family secrets and tension between his aunt Suzette and her son Jean-Yves.
I was tempted to give up on this about 30 minutes in, but am glad I continued. This is not going to be something to appeal to a casual moviegoer, but it has rewarding moments. I think I admire the effort more than I could say I enjoyed this.
