Review of The Thirteenth Floor (1999) by Oriol N — 22 Feb 2010
For such an obscure film with unknown actors, an unknown director and a plot almost too epic for it's own good, this was a surprise winner for me. ironically, the film came out the same year as the matrix which probably explains why it went under the radar. it doesn't help that the film's plot also deals with reality as a computer generated program.
I agree with some reviews that the film had a made for tv quality to it especially in the area of special fx. but it was a very high tv quality, with a tight cast of actors and a great neo-noir screenplay. whereas the matrix had a rare perfect balance of action, special effects and screenplay, 13th floor focused more on acting and screenplay. I enjoyed the murder mystery vibe to it.
