Review of The Thirteenth Floor (1999) by Alexander R — 17 Dec 2012
This movie happened to tackle the same theory of "mind in a vat" as the Matrix, which made for a real bumpy ride at the box office. What a pity. It deals with subtle issues of reality and reality simulation in a way that's often more engaging than the Matrix sequels.
The acting is better, if not the action. Sure, the fights are not dazzling, and there is no bullet time, and the main protagonist is not bending ass backwards to dodge the evildoer's shots. But the story is excellent, and the plot twists are not always predictable, which makes guessing the culprit a fun game.
A++, will watch again!
