Review of The Third Man (1949) by Skip U — 09 Mar 2009
I know this is a cult favorite and considered one of the best film-noire types, but I have to say...I wasn't all that impressed. Sure, Orson Welles was awesome in his role of the immoral Harry Lime, but then again you don't get to enjoy that until the last hour or so.
Joseph Cotten was so-so - I found his character hard to believe and fairly cliched. The black and white photography was another high point - the camera really captures the wet, depressing air of post-war Vienna.
But the plot to me was a bit predictablel and left me a tad cold. And the zither theme music just about drove me nuts. An interesting movie but, IMHO, not the top ranking classic it's often made out to be.
