From the ahead-of-its-time screenplay, morbid yet darkly comical, to the stellar performances, The Third Man is nothing short of a masterpiece. Carol Reed's ability to build atmosphere is comparable to the great Hitchcock, even surpassing many of his works.

I Confess for example, similar in themes, is notably weaker compared to this. The disjointed angles, the German speaking strangers, the expressionist shadows all contributes to the creation of a mysterious and complex world, allowing the viewer to feel just as helpless as protagonist Holly Martins.

The Third Man is a defining British film, one of the best mysteries ever made. Unsurpassable.
