Review of The Third Man (1949) by Elizabeth L — 14 Jul 2012
This is a great movie, not quite a masterpiece, still better than 90% of classic movies.
The story is of Holly Martins. He goes to Vienna with a promise of a job from an old friend named Harry Lime. Upon arrival, he is told that Lime is dead. Soon thereafter, Holly is told that his friend Lime was a thief and a murderer. Holly eventually comes to believe it, and also discovers that Lime is not dead at all.
Joseph Cotton plays Holly Martins. Orson Wells might get top billing, but Joseph Cotton is the star of this movie. Wells doesn't show up until the end of the movie, but when he does, it is very memorable. He steals the show with his fantastic lines.
Overall, this is a great classic movie. One note, the music is just about as annoying as can be. But classic movies don't often get better than this.
"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They producedd Michaelangelo, da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock." 8/10.
