Review of The Third Man (1949) by Luc L — 27 Apr 2014
Carol Reed's The Third Man is a film-noir to dance toe to toe with the best. The film is written incredibly well, and directed extremely will too- War torn Vienna is shadowy and ominous and always a bit offsetting with the police checkpoints and unhappy citizens.
Joseph Cotten is the leading man, and he does well, but not overly, the scene-stealer and one of the best things about the film is the great Orson Welles, who holds such a screen presence and stature unparalleled by anyone but greats like Brando or Marx.
The film is slow and a bit lacking drive during the first half, but easily makes up for it in the ending sequence. Through and through the film was enjoyable and extremely well made. 5/5.
