Review of The Thing from Another World (1951) by Jim S — 17 Jun 2007
"Watch the skies, everywhere! Keep looking. Keep watching the skies!" The science fiction 'B' films of the 1950's have a charm of their own. Light hearted monster romps with cheesy characters and dialogue aimed at filling matinees with screaming kids.
Howard Hawks' The Thing from Another World is not one of these pictures. The Thing is scary. Oh, the dialogue is from the 50's "Oh, you ninny, look!", but James Arness' creature is violent, blood thirsty (literally) and terrifying.
There are moments of suspense and sheer horror here. Do not watch the colorized version. The movie is much more effective in the original black and white.
