Review of The Thing from Another World (1951) by Jim M — 23 Dec 2008
Along with the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The original Thing is one of the 50s Sci-fi films that still holds up nicely. Can't really be comparable to Carpenter's remake, as all he took was the basic premise.
Considering the film is so damn chatty, it's a cracker jack script which moves along at a nice clip, establishing things in that no nonsense Howard Hawks way. Dmitri Timokin's Theremin- centric score really amps up the classic thrills.
The idea of plant life developing like that of Earth's animal forms but without the hindrance of emotions or sexuality is pretty neato and frightening. The look of the monster - "Frankenstein vampire plant man from Mars" - doesn't really sell the concept in all its true glory, but it's still a blast to watch the few moments the Thing does appear.
All in all, an enjoyable 90 minutes.
