Review of The Thing (2011) by Ben R — 23 Jun 2012
Nowhere near as bad as expected but this film cannot even hope to approach the precision and brilliance of Carpenter's 1982 version. Billed as a prequel you could be forgiven for thinking it's a remake, as the situations and of course the creature are near identical.
But there is only so much that can be done with the subject matter: Shape-shifting alien attacks Antarctic base. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is weak as the lead, the rest of the acting is workmanlike, as is the script.
The effects are fairly good but, being CGI, they lack some of the grisly realism of Bottin's work on the 1982 classic. I wonder when the movie industry will get bored of trying to rehash these classic and untouchable films?
