Review of The Thing (2011) by Kenneth B — 02 Sep 2012
This really is a remake masquerading as a prequel.. The structure is nearly identical to Carpenter's The Thing and certain set pieces feel like they've been lifted directly. This is a work of little or no imagination, content to pilfer ideas from altogether superior films.
Plot points, such as the central predicament, are described in such layman's terms that there appears to be no assumed intelligence on the part of the audience. It robs 2011's The Thing of any subtlety.
The CGI runs wild, but alarmingly the effects in Carpenter's 1982 film still look more convincing than the disproportionately fast and rather unconvincing CGI monster effects. Rather than a tense sci-fi horror film, this degenerated, quite willingly, into a half baked monster-action flick.
This is another reinterpretation of a classic film that we could have done without.
