I'm a huge fan of the 1982 The Thing and honestly this wasn't that bad. The flaw is the lack of practical effects and how much it copies the original. The Thing needed a prequel and I'm surprised it took so long to do one! For what we got it was okay.
However one thing it does wrong is the monster is less cunning and smart. It seems to pop up at times it doesn't need too. The 1982 monster let traps and only came out as a last resort. The Thing 2011 doesn't hold a candle to the 1982 version but it's a good story that does a great job setting up the next film!
