Review of The Thing (2011) by Andrew P — 17 Aug 2012
While it purports to be a prequel to the much-loved 1982 John Carpenter thriller, this new 2011 incarnation is more of a loose remake. Since we know where the original begins, there isn't much intrigue as to where this one will end.
It could've been helped with some decent scares, but the abundance of CGI creature effects allows us to distance ourselves from anything happening to the characters on screen; the great part about Carpenter's flick was that you could see the actors right next to the gory creatures - they were tangible.
So the characters become interchangeable, whether they be Norwegian or American, and we're left with a movie that isn't terrible, but doesn't do anything to set itself apart from any other scarefest.
