Review of The Thing (2011) by Mick T — 31 Mar 2013
Better than expected prequel, as well as one of the better horror re imaginings to pop up since the DAWN OF THE DEAD boom a decade ago. I felt Winstead was too miscast and unemotional, it's difficult to care about her character, particularly when we are supposed to be rooting for her.
..she's no MacReady! That being said, it was well-paced and certainly respectful of John Carpenter's original, which was itself a remake of 1954's THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD. As expected, the major difference is the CGI effects, which are serviceable but lack the gooey rubber brilliance of the 1980s version.
Still, I would say this is a good enough time-killer, and the original's fans shouldn't be upset in anyway.
