Review of The Thing (1982) by Farron K — 20 May 2015
I'm certainly not one for horror movies at all, but I had heard this was one of the legendary ones, so I gave it a shot. Not as scary as other horror movies I have seen; I'd say it ranks in the same category as the Alien movies (gory, hell creatures, a few closet scares, lots of action).
Basically, a shapeshifting alien crash-lands on Earth about 100,000 years ago in Antarctica, hops out of its ship, and freezes. 1982 comes around and some Norwegians with aim bad enough to make Stormtroopers feel proud of themselves unearth the nightmare creature, which subsequently awakens and goes on a killing spree.
It eventually makes its way to an American base, and things go straight to hell. The gory effects are great 1980s stuff with lots of anatomical grossness and blood that looks like red housepaint. The cast is full of the usual morons you expect to die in terrible ways, and there is gratuitous usage of flamethrowers.
Kurt Russell is the lead man, and so naturally he ends the big fight with a one-liner that had me laughing up a storm. Overall, a good Friday Night scarefest.
