Review of The Thing (1982) by Mark W — 11 Sep 2012
Dark, harrowing and gristly, John Carpenter creates a fatalistic, sombre masterpiece permeated by a constant overwhealming sense of dread and expertly built tension. The timeless make up effects by Rob Bottin come from the darkest corners of imagination and are beautifully horryifying and shot perfectly, remaining the pinnacle of movie monster art to this day.
The strong cast of actors including Kurt Russell, Keith David and Wilford Brimley add humanity to the film, and turn what would be victims in a lesser film, into strong, well drawn likeable men, trapped on the edge of the world, besieged by a alien menace that could be any of them.
The tone that is created is melancholic, continuity is perfect and the bleak jet black ending is not only one of the most daring, but also one of the most fervently discussed conclusions of all time.
