Review of The Thing (1982) by Jon R — 24 Dec 2012
This is my favorite Scifi Horror movie of all time for several reasons. It has amazing tensions and it's sense of claustrophobia and paranoia is just perfect. I think that to often directors try to hard to attach us to the characters and the feeling of the circumstance that the characters are in only becomes secondary.
In "The Thing" it doesn't matter who the characters are, they could be anybody and it wouldn't have made the film any less impacting. The camerawork is great and Carpenter's use of light and dark sets helps emphasize the paranoid circumstance for the characters.
The lack of CGI actually makes the monsters look more real in my estimation and this really added something (they should use these robotic techniques now instead of CGI). The soundtrack (although dated) is great and the use of silence and natural sounds (wind, metal clanking etc.
) all add substantially to the visuals. It's basically amazing, thats really all I have to say about it.
