Review of The Thing (1982) by Dan B — 02 Jan 2013
I haven't seen a horror movie as good as this one in a long, long time. The effects are obviously the shining spectacle here, but this movie has a tense atmosphere that is unparalleled by any other monster movie that these eyes have ever seen. The phrase "it could be anyone" is one that no reviewer can help but use, but it perfectly sums the film up- Carpenter ingeniously decides to keep the viewer guessing by not revealing who the infected person is until seconds before the chaos begins. Even the ones we expect end up giving us a jolt. I was as paranoid as the characters, who, by the way, were awesome. MacReady is a certified badass, but what else can we expect from a 1980s Kurt Russell?
Even after my first viewing, I think this could end up as one of my favorite horror films and certainly one of the best monster movies of all time. Don't rent or stream it- buy it.
