Review of The Thing (1982) by Petros T — 29 Dec 2017
Already I'm hooked from the beginning. You don't really understand what's going on, but you know shit's about to go down. The set pieces are wonderful and the locations are great. Attention was given to detail. The dog is so perceptive to everything that's going on. He's a good dog, you can tell, and has amazing acting chops.
That first creature was so grotesque looking. The special effects and make-up are amazing in this movie. Really top notch stuff. Let me tell you something, the creatures in this movie, are fucked up man. Lol. It's the kind of shit that induces nightmares. The movie is so creepy and there's this underlying atmosphere in the air that provides a tension all throughout the movie.
Kurt Russell's hat that he wears throughout the movie, I know was put in to add some kind of humor or to break the tension and the terror of this movie.
I love how the ending sort of leaves it open to the audience's interpretation. Even though we don't really know if Child's is The Thing or not, I like to think that he probably is. Note that at the beginning of the movie when MacReady is playing chess on the computer and he ends up losing, he pours alcohol in the computer destroying it. I like to think that throughout the movie, MacReady is playing chess with all the other humans and at the end it's like he gets check mated by Child's. Just like with the computer, MacReady gives alcohol to Child's to end sort of end it all.
Overall, wonderfully creepy and terrifying movie with great special effects, animatronics, and make-up.
