Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Frank M — 22 Apr 2010
When I saw this 12 yrs ago in the theatre I kept dozing off so I figure its time to give it another shot. I am not really into war movies but the war action in this movie is 5 star material, possibly the best ever in movies. Beautifully shot, perfectly executed, painstakingly real action with an excellent score behind it all. Theres about a solid hour of that.
But then comes the rest of the nearly 3 hour drama, 40+ minutes of which could easily be cut out. The voiceovers are lame--the ideas behind those voiceovers and also of some of the dialog offer nothing new especially in the war movie genre. We get that war is awful. Why am I not surprised to find penn, travolta, and clooney mixed into this movie either?
If you can manage to get past the first 30 minutes and the last hour or so you'll find a pretty solid movie. Worth it for the action. Thats it though.
