Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by John D — 07 Jun 2010
Pretencious and criminally boring, The Thin Red Line is a gigantic waste of both talent and time. By attempting to invest us in about 15 different characters, I ended up caring about absolutely none of them.
Despite supposedly having to cut three hours of footage out, a shocking amount of scenery porn still makes it into the film (sure, the cinematography is great, but sometimes the randomness of it all is just too much).
The nearly sole redeeming feature is an awesome performance from Nick Nolte as a power-hungry Colonel. Perhaps as a mini-series with more fleshed out characters and more space for the scenery porn, the film would have been as great as its reputation.
As it stands, this three hour epic is a nearly waste of tape, unless you're an extreme cinematography fanatic, skip it.
