Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Anne F — 07 Aug 2010
A lusciously shot, poetic treatment of the grimy, bloody battle of Guadalcanal with a giant cast of familiar faces. Malick's treatment of war is highly original, focusing rather on the treatment of the environment and how the soldier's interact, rather than prolonged action sequences.
The battle scenes are particularly well-done. The poetic ramblings tend to stray off into nausea, but the performances hold them at bay. Voice-overs run a tad long and dry.
