Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Ben W — 01 Oct 2010
Malicks return from a long term sabbatical is....well, uninspired to say the least in everything apart from the cinematography. its a war film with too many sympathies. it wants to be detached and poetic, but also wants to dig into the lives of its characters and tell a personal story and ends up failing in both.
it has quite the stable of actors and uses none to their potential. malicks voice over writing for the characters is so earnest that you know its heartfelt, but devoid of any real insight and therefore becomes tiresome very early on.
it is not a worthy antiwar film. the only thing that makes it worth the watch is john tolls cinematography. and even that isnt as good as it was in malicks previous film days of heaven.
