Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by James-Masaki R — 13 Dec 2010
The Thin Red Line is probably my all-time favorite war movie. It is directed by one of my favorite director, Terrence Malick, who is absolutely incredible but very underrated. If you liked Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now, you'll like this movie.
But I think this movie is a bit better than both of them. It's very poetic and how the director works with the nature, wich is all around the caracters, it becomes clearly one main caracter in the story.
There's a beautiful juxtaposition between humanity, philosophy and the terror of war. The voice-over narration is absolutely wonderful, very poetic and that's what tells the story. A lot of people didn't get this movie, I don't know why, probably because they wanted to see just another WWII movie, because it is not.
It is slow, you need to have some sort of open mind. And they just miss the whole point of this movie and how beautiful it is. The editing, the music, everything is perfect. My favorite scene, the opening, is just breath taking.
It's a beautiful, poetic film for your meditation. THIS IS art, THIS IS cinema.
