Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Daniel O — 27 Sep 2011
An underrated thought provoking work of art. The color rich environments of Guadalcanal Island are beautifully captured through some fantastic cinematography which Terrence Malick is masterfully able to juxtapose to the violence of men, war and even nature itself.
It may be tempting to compare this depiction of World War 2 to Saving Private Ryan, but this could prove dangerous as The Thin Red line lacks the grittiness and violent realism that Spielberg' so brilliantly and disturbingly created.
More over Terrence Malick attempts to depict the mental and emotional inner workings of soldiers, results in a etheral almost dream like atmosphere. This film isn't for everyone, as the pacing may be perceived as slow or irregular, but for those willing to set aside distraction and view this movie in it's entirety will be greatly rewarded.
A must see.
