Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by J.j. W — 01 Jan 2012
A very unorthodox war movie that pushes the boundaries of our ideals of war, humanity, and justice. This movie is a masterpiece at outlining the various, and often, contradictory personal realities of war.
The cast is also absolutely amazing. Nick Nolte should have won an Oscar solely for putting in so much depth in a character that's stereotypical and often mishandled (don't agree? Pay attention to Nolte's subtle acting in the outpost scene).
Probably one of the best parts of the movie is how it takes stereotypical characters and injects so much humanity in each of them. Each character's dialogue can be elaborated to the point of thesis papers.
That is how strong the script's writing is. The film's only serious flaw is the editing and the pacing which shows up after the midpoint. The second act of the movie could have been tweaked with a better sense of direction.
