I really tried to get into this movie, but it just never happened. The director attempted to do too much at once, and the story is all over the place. Some of the battle scenes depicting Guadalcanal are solid, but this isn't really a war movie at it's heart.

The Thin Red Line attempts to be very deep and poetic, though I'm not entirely sure what the director is ultimately getting at. In the same vein as Apocalypse Now, the war raging around the characters in this film serves only as a backdrop to greater "meaning of life" questions.

While the former movie succeeds in pondering some of these with great success, I'm not sure Thin Red Line delivers. It has it's moments, but in the end it sort of just felt like a muddled mess in need of some serious reediting.

Hopefully we will see a "redux" version in twenty years!
