A real story of war from the soldier's perspective and also about the internal suffering of war. Lots of famous names all play their individual parts to an epic journey into madness. Penn is superb in the lead and the film is (as with all Malick's work) more an artform than a battle.
The imagery of animals and the cool blue water shows that life still goes on around war, it is just the greed and horror of man that interrupts the calmness of nature.
