Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Damjan R — 30 Jun 2012
Visually impressive and wonderfully directed with a very fine eye for detail and the human condition in general which is in this case affected by war. While very broad reaching and ambitious, it's power is somewhat lessened by it's length and occasional meandering of focus.
The shared voice-over should be and is enough for us to get a sense that the soldiers (and humans) are "one" being, without it being said, and that type of overwriting does the film no favors.
The action is brilliantly done and the hill taking sequence is on of the best war movies have ever given us. Other antiwar films may not as be this ethereal, but pack more of a punch.
