Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Jeremy C — 06 Feb 2014
The best war movie since Apocalypse Now. A gorgeous tone poem that contrasts the horrors of war-related carnage with the beauty of nature and pure humanity. The battle scenes are horrific, but not exploitative.
The beauty and philosophy never gives way to sentimentality. Not just a war picture, it uses the war as a backdrop to contemplate the big picture of life itself; anyone can get multiple meanings from it.
The Thin Red Line is overshadowed by more patriotic war films, but is miles above all of them. It is so mesmerizing and moving that the three hour running time never feels long. It's a must-see.
