Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Matt G — 16 Jul 2014
Not my favourite genre: the last war films I saw were the Eastwood Iwo Jima pair. This one has less unrelenting combat and instead has contrasts with an idyllic natural environment, and Polynesian village life.
Main components are the internal meditations of the soldiers as they try and make sense of brutal reality, plus a contradictory musical background and lots of weird arty camera angles and framed shots.
You can see it's reaching for 'greatness'. It didn't do it for me; I felt incredibly relieved that I was born in 1950 and got to play soldiers in the primary school playground instead of having to do it for real.
